Get Ready for Action!
Spokesperson McRae
On Tuesday 19 April Auckland Council will publicly release its proposals for dealing with intensification in the city and whether Special Character Areas like Devonport will retain its protections.
There will be three weeks until 9th May for the public to respond and we urge you all to give feedback when the time comes.
The Council proposals will include maps of Devonport showing where the council is proposing to delete parts of streets or houses, from the Special Character Areas.
Devonport Heritage will make available an outline of the main points that should be made in your feedback, on our website and newsletter.
We are already working hard on our case that most of Devonport should continue to be protected by the heritage rules that at present control demolition, restoration, heights and boundaries.
If places lose these protections it means that three storey homes, three storeys high can be built to property boundaries without resource consent.
This will be allowed to happen when the council plan change is notified on 20 August this year.
We have received enormous support in the form of emails and donations since the council’s plans for Devonport were leaked a month ago.
Our petition has 2090 signatures, many from people who don’t live in Devonport but who value the place for its unique historic and physical beauty. And of course thousands have been from concerned Devonport people.
We are thrilled to have received $10,000 in donations which will help us put expert case to council for Devonport to retain its protections. However we still need more because we have to make a further submission to the Plan Change hearing in August this year. Yes - it is endless!
